Hokuao 201H Housing Project, January 27, 2022, Construction Progress

The Hokuao 201H Housing Project, which was proposed by billionaire Larry Ellison’s company Pulama Lana’i, includes the development of 150 two-bedroom rental homes — 76 affordable and 74 market rate — on about 76 acres of former pineapple fields neighboring Lanai City.

Construction fencing was being placed around the perimeter of the housing project this week. Unfortunately, many Cook Island Pine Trees had to be cut down due to the fact that they were too close together and unable to be transplanted.

Pulama Lānaʻi held a community meeting a few years ago and said the homes were originally going to be affordable housing available for purchase; however, those plans changed this past year, and instead, all will be rental homes. Pulama Lānaʻi continues to buy up the vast majority of homes that go on the market on the island, leaving many long-time residents unable to buy their first homes.
