Small Tsunami Hits Lānaʻiʻs Small Boat Harbor

Updated: Jan 23

On January 15, 2022, a unsuspecting small Tsunami struck in the very early mornings hours at Manele Small Boat Harbor, generated by an underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga. Surges rose over the road in some parts of the harbor and caused one boat to come perfectly balanced on a boat slip.

Throughout the day, the harbor experienced drastic surges, approximately 5 minutes between the high and low end of the surge.

Expeditions Ferry that operates between Maui and Lānaʻi suspended all services to the island due to unsafe docking conditions at both Manele and Lahaina boat harbors. Service resumed the following day.
